Just after sketching the underpainting, brush in hand, the studio leaped and rattled as a5.6 earthquake struck. Needless to say, the premeditated painting was abandoned for a much more immediate response to the tremblor.

Much of the swish series has relied on wind to motivate the work (a force seen only in its impact) but adding water movement allows this painting to investigate the history of gradual change.

Y'know when you're making gelatin and you've poured in the water but the gelatin hasn't set yet? That's what I envision if the Big One causes liquefaction in the area. Terrifying, ruinous, but ultimately cool. Life in the liquefaction zone. There's beauty everywhere, even in the horrific imaginings of disaster.

The original now resides with one of ABC-TV’s “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” families.

Seeking beauty in the ordinary, the swirl of a load of laundry (jeans, a red sweatshirt and a green t-shirt amidst a whirl of suds) provided the inspiration for this popular work.

Inspired by the American experience, this piece explores movement and the dynamic forces of transition. As subtle lights radiate from the deep blue field, red banners billow and race across the canvas. Soft white accents complete the palette.
